Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection, but it is not usually serious. With the right treatment, it typically clears within 7 to 10 days. While anyone can develop impetigo, it is especially common in young children.
The condition usually begins with red sores or blisters — although redness may be less visible on brown or black skin. These blisters burst quickly, leaving golden-brown, crusty patches on the skin.
These patches may:
- Look similar to corn flakes stuck to the skin
- Increase in size
- Spread to other areas of the body
- Feel itchy
- Occasionally cause discomfort or pain
